The Hit Squad Volunteers
In the summer of 2021 Hereford hosted the month long visit of the Knife Angel at Hereford Cathedral.
Over 200 volunteers were gathered to cover the event. Pauline Strong was the volunteer coordinator.
When the Angel left Hereford Pauline invited groups of volunteers to her home to thank them for
taking part, many of whom showed an interest in staying in touch and possibly doing more volunteering.
Pauline came up with the idea of the Hit Squad Helpers and after many emails and discussions,
formed the group; then requests started to come in.
One of the first and most challenging tasks we undertook, was to assist with Remembrance Day 2021. This proved to be very successful both with the public, the organisers Hereford City Council and with The Royal British Legion. After a few more jobs we teamed up with HVOSS to provide support at local events.
2022 brought many more occasions when we helped, and it kept all of us busy. As the events came in, so did the number of volunteers. We helped at the new Hereford Applefest, a hugely successful day for the City and the team.
2023 was our second full year and the events are more and varied. From making tea and coffee on Armistice Day to helping to get the Christmas Lights switched on, these events brought much fun, laughter and a some dancing in the street!
We also have a social side, we have enjoyed Christmas drinks in the Bishop's Palace, drinks and nibbles with the Mayor of Hereford in her Parlour, and fundraising Bingo and Quiz Nights. Plans for this year are underway.
We have become a well known and successful community group, taking on local challenges and enjoying friendships while helping in our local area.
If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and enjoy helping the public, why not come and join us. There is no commitment!
